5 Signs That Will Let You Know If You’re In a ‘Dying’ Fandom!

Okay, picture yourself having finished watching an anime title, and immediately jumping on the web to chat it up with your online fan buddies afterwards. You then do aย  Google search on the series that you’ve just finished watching, and find tons and tons of fan material on it. (i.e. fan fiction, fan art, cosplay pictures, etc.) Whenever you find out another person likes the series you’ve just watched, you instantly become friends. Everything about the series you’ve watched is awesome; the story, the fandom, the whole nine yards!

Okay, now fast-forward ahead by ten years. Do a Google search of the same series that you’ve watched ten years ago, and see if people are still talking about it online. Head to any fan fiction or fan art site and see if those same stories and artwork from the fans you met back then, are still visible on the site. Notice anything different? The fan fiction stories you’ve once read are not there anymore (or not being posted as often), cosplay pics from the series are scarce, and if you go to an anime convention, only two people out of 40,000+ attendees cosplay as the characters from the series you’ve just watched.

Yep, you’ve realized you’re in a dying fandom.

We’ve all been there, but what do you do about it? Before we answer that question, here’s five ways (or five signs rather) to identify if you’re in a fandom ‘Dead Zone’.

148hfh

5. When its Original Source Material Disappears

The digital age is more powerful today than it was when it first got started. Many ways anime producers got their product out to the masses (and is still relevant today) was through movie advertisements, commercial promos, and now, social media! It’s so easy to promote anime and share it with the fans in this modern day and time, but what happens when fans can no longer find source material on the title(s) that they’re passionate about? Does it mean that the fandom is dead? Not entirely…

4. Rare Cosplay Sightings

Anime conventions are a part of the otaku lifestyle, and with that comes the ‘usual suspects’ of cosplay. (i.e. Naruto, SAO, DBZ to name a few.) A. Goldman an I were big fans of Negima! Magister Negi Magi when it first came out (before Sentai Filmworks bought the rights from FUNimation), but after ten years of going to cons we’ve only found one or two souls cosplaying as Asuna, Ayaka, or Negi Springfield – out of 40,000+ people.

3. When it’s Infected with Trolls (aka Internet Cockroaches)

Or as we like to call them, ‘Internet Cockroaches’. There are many great fandoms out there who have diehard fans in them, but at the same time you also have to worry about the many cockroaches that crawl around on the dark parts of the chat room. This is very troubling for current fans in the fandom, and makes it easy for them to manipulate new fans to turn against the current ones through lies and deceit. If you want to save your fandom from evil, digital heroes (like OWLS) are only a tweet away…

2. When New Fans question the mental state of Old Fans of said Fandom

There are fandom trolls, and there are ‘fandom asylums’. Nothing will drive a new fan away from a fandom better than a ‘toxic environment’ created by existing fans’ digitally ill-willed actions. The My Little Pony fandom is a prime example of this, as many fans of the show are rather hesitant in identifying themselves as ‘bronies’ because of the negative reputation its been getting.

1. When a fandom loses its Core Values

That is the fandom-killing blow of any fandom! If an anime title is promoting peace and fighting against discrimination of any kind, you would expect that the fans of its fandom would follow the same mantra in their groups, or meetups. Once a fandom forgets the core values of the title from which the values are portrayed, then the fandom is nothing more than a ‘hollow shell of a lost cause’. This means that younger generations of the fandom will know the characters of the fandom’s title, but not the real message behind it. And that is a crying shame.

There are many symptoms that can be spotted and identified when it comes to being in a dying fandom. However, it is difficult for a fandom to actually ‘die’. If there are two or more people still talking about a title, movie, or a show years after its ended, then its fandom is not truly dead. Small fandoms are not dying fandoms just because there’s not a lot of activity going on in them, where as if a big fandom falls, it falls hard. Fast!

A Founder’s Thoughts with D.J. Lewis: How I Got into Anime!

Hey there guys! I know that tonight we were supposed to do our bi-weekly D&A Friday’s post, but tonight, I wanna talk about how I first got into anime. For many of us the stories of how we found ourselves trying to get senpai to notice us, can be traced back to the early years of our lives. As for me, that story can be traced back as far as 1995…

hqdefault

1995 – 2000: The Saban Entertainment Era (aka The VHS Era)

Back when I was in the second grade, I watched a lot of cartoons as many of you probably have back in the early/mid 90’s. Back then there was shows like the original X-Men, Spiderman, The Fantastic Four, and so many others. I was also a big Nintendo nerd as well, so when the Super Mario Bros. show would come on every Saturday morning, I was right there with a big bowl of Captain Crunch! (Shout-out to the Captain, and we’re not talkin’ about Ginyu…yet.)

GOT_YOU_1

In fact, back then the first time I watched anime was in 1995. My first ever anime title was Samurai Pizza Cats, and even though the plot is kinda vague to me now as a guy in his late 20’s, I still remember the opening theme like it was yesteryear. Between 1997-1999 I found myself watching the DIC/Saban dub of Sailor Moon, and eventually Dragon Ball Z; the true gritty animation version that 2nd Gen Millennials (or post-Millennials) would call “Caveman Dragon Ball”, causing many 1st Gen Millennials (like myself) to go medieval on their Twitter feed. FYI, 1st Gen Millennials are those born between 1985-2003, and 2nd Gen 2004-Present. We also got cable around this time, so this was also the time period where I started watching the first broadcast of Toonami on Cartoon Network.

2000 – 2005: The FUNimation Entertainment Era (Not for you, but for me)

As I mentioned before I found myself watching more anime when Toonami was broadcasted. During this five year period I was watching a mix of both Eastern and Western animation; such as Tenchi Muyo (Original), Sailor Moon, DBZ, Pokemon, Mon Colle Knights, Digimon, Jackie Chan Adventures, Batman: The Animated Series, Freakizoid, and even Speed Racer (and he came out in the 70’s)! In 2002 a new tread would emerge that would rival the DBZ fandom, and that was Naruto.

Honestly, I hated it when it first came out because it wasn’t, well, Dragon Ball Z. Now before you start slamming those fingers on your keypad and try to digitally reprehend me for saying such a thing, just know that I didn’t start getting into it until the Chunin Exams Arc (two seasons later). I was also in Middle School at this time, and this is right around the time I met my best friend of 15+ years; Aaron M. Goldman, the blog’s secondary founder.

2005 – Present: College Years, Anime Conventions, and D&A Anime Blog

The FUNimation Channel was the highlight for many of us who were able to afford DISH satellite, as for me I was still kind of limited to just Cartoon Network and Comcast. In 2008 I went to my first ever anime convention in Baltimore, MD known as Otakon. Back then I had no idea there was even such a thing, but when I went, I was exposed to a world that would be the cornerstone of this anime blog. Aaron didn’t start going with me to Otakon until 2010, and for the next eight years that convention was our annual otaku hangout spot!

In the Summer of 2015 we received word that Otakon was going to have is farewell year next Summer at the Baltimore Convention Center. It was also the same year that D&A Anime Blog came into fruition.

The anime titles I watched during this period expanded well from just DBZ. I was watching titles like Negima!, The Sacred Blacksmith, Sekirei, Corpse Princess, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, Danganronpa, and so many more! Since the blog launched back in January of 2016, I now find myself connecting with the voice actors behind hundreds of my favorite anime characters. It’s been a fun 20+ years as an anime fan, as it has gotten me through some tough times while at the same time, helping me make new friends! ๐Ÿ™‚

Filler Post: D&A’s Top 5 Anime Characters with Fire Powers!

If you’ve seen enough anime titles within the last 20 years (depending on what age you are), then you may have noticed that a large fraction of them have special powers. For the Z Fighters of Dragon Ball Z it’s the concept of Ki energy, for Blue Exorcist it may be strong magical powers and abilities. Many of us wish we could have access to those powers in our everyday lives, but with great power comes great responsibility. (And some of us aren’t 100% aware of the kind of responsibility comes with great power.)

Out of all the special abilities we as fans wish we could have or use, Fire seems to be one of the most common of said abilities. There are many characters out there in the anime universe that use fire, but these five in particular are favorites among the anime community (as well as on this post). So here is our Top 5 anime characters who know how to turn up the heat!

Mars-anime

Number 5: Sailor Mars

To celebrate International Women’s Day we kick off this filler post with our fifth pick, Sailor Mars. If you remember watching Sailor Moon back in the 90’s, then you already know that Sailor Mars is one of the original Sailor Scouts. Mars uses talismans that conjure up fire blasts in order to damage her enemies, just as long as her enemy isn’t water-based. Although she has a lot of fire power, we just hope she has a cool temper.

Movie4

Number 4: Shana

A powerful Flame Haze from the Crimson Realm. She carries a katana that allows her to use her fire powers as a Flame Haze. She has the power to wield flames, is an ace swordswoman, and is well known throughout the realm as “The Great One”. She may be cute and moe, but don’t let that fool you. After all she is a Flame Haze.

RoyMustangEp40

Number 3: Roy Mustang

Ah, yes. The legendary flame alchemist of FMA as well as Brotherhood. With just a snap of his finger (like a lighter) he’ll set anything and anyone ablaze that he doesn’t like. This handsome devil does have some charm to him, and by the way ladies, he’s also a dog lover too! ๐Ÿ™‚

HieiOfficial

Number 2: Hiei

Any Yu Yu Hakasho fans in the house? Guess what, your favorite just made it as number two on our Top 5 list! Hiei is one of the four main characters in the series, and is a fire-apparition as well as an S-Class Demon. He has incredible fire and ice resistance thanks to his nature of being a fire demon, which also means that weaker fire-based attacks won’t do any damage to him whatsoever. Aside from his fire abilities Hiei is quite durable in battle, and is also a master swordsman.

Natsu's_image

Number 1: Natsu Dragneel

No one is more on fire than this guy! Natsu Dragneel is a member of the Fairy Tail Guild who possesses Fire Dragon Slayer Magic, and has powerful abilities that allow him to use the full extent of his magic. His signature move Fire Dragon’s Roar is his go to move when it battle, followed by various other fire magic attacks each more powerful than the last. Natsu also has a rather athletic build (much like his VO), which may be the reason why the majority of his fanbase is female. Other then that, Natsu is one hot dude! (No pun intended! XP)

Filler Post: What’s So ‘Epic’ About Pop Team Epic?

Every five to ten years an anime title comes along that is so random, so unpredictable, and so ‘far out’, that the title itself almost doesn’t even seem to fit in the same category as it’s anime brother and sister titles. When Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt made its way to the U.S. it took everything we loved about late 90’s western animation, and dropped it on its head with sex jokes, hilarious parodies, and adult animation. Now in 2018 we have a new obsession in the form of two fourteen year old girls with cute faces, and supposedly foul mouths. JoJo is not the only one who has bizarre adventures, so say hello to Popuko and Pipimi of Pop Team Epic, as we discover what makes this show so epic!

popteamepic

Before it became an anime series, Pop Team Epic was a four panel surreal-humor webcomic and manga created by Bkub Okawa. The story itself follows the lives of two girls named Popuko and Pipimi, as they find themselves in hilariously bizarre and mundane situations, and pretty much react to them in the same way. This series (including the manga and digital webcomic) has been met with rather high praise from both Japanese and Western audiences for its over-the-top randomness, surreal humor, absurdity, and everything else. But what is it about this show that makes it so epic?

There are many theories that surround this question as to why this series is so epic in its own ways. As for us on the D&A front, we have our own.

1. Surreal and Bizarre Humor

Comedic timing is so important when it comes to comedies of any kind. As a writer and a producer you have to know when to hit em’ in the gut with a laugh, and how hard to hit em’. Pop Team Epic has that ‘I-dunno-what-the-hell-I’m-watching-but-it’s-funny’ type of comedy to it. Add in the surreal and bizarre element to this type of comedy, and you’ve got a recipe for some bizarrely epic laughs!

2. Multiple Voice Actors

We know a lot of anime characters with Multiple Personality Syndrome (MPS), but when it comes to Pop Team Epic just having one voice actor for Popuko and Pipimi won’t cut it! Both girls have an almost combined 32 different voice actors between them, which is 16 for Popuko and 16 for Pipimi. If you ever wanted to hear what Todd Haberkorn or Chris Sabat’s voice sounds like coming out of a girl, then this is the show for you!

3. The “Western Style” Episode Format and Mixed Bag Animation Styles

The last time we saw this format was back when Panty & Stocking was dubbed. Each episode of Pop Team Epic is divided into two 15-minute segments having different voice actors for each of the girls. With a show like this you won’t get just one style of animation, you’ll get multiple styles such as a CGI-type of style, 2D animation, and other styles that you may or may not be familiar with.

There’s more to this series than meets the eye; like the fact that not only does this series do pop culture parodies, but does parodies from other anime and video games as well (i.e. Call of Duty and Pokemon). There’s really no full-fledged story plot for a series like this, only because with all the craziness surrounding it, there’s really no need for one.

You can find this series on Crunchyroll, so if you’re looking for something bizarrely and humorously epic, then check out Pop Team Epic!

D&A’s Crunchyroll Spotlight: Recovery of an MMO Junkie!

1692058_English_KeyArt-OfficialVideoImage_7ee66cbf-73af-e711-8175-020165574d09

Hey there anime guys n’ gals! This is a special filler post that we’re calling our D&A Crunchyroll Spotlight, where we highlight a new anime title that you can stream on Crunchyroll’s anime streaming library! Tonight’s entry deals with the struggles that can plague and effect the life of an MMORPG player, in this anime title known as Recovery of an MMO Junkie!

Overview Breakdown:

Moriko Morioka is a 30-year-old woman with a successful career at a corporate job, but decides to quit it in order to before a full-time NEET and find a more fulfilling life. She finds herself playing an online MMORPG called Fruits de Mer and creates a male avatar character named Hayashi for herself in the game. Hayashi meets another in-game character named Lily who is a high-level character who helps him learn how to navigate through the game. Eventually Hayashi joins Lily’s guild called @HomeParty, while in the Real World Moriko encounters a company employee named Yuta Sakurai, who possibly might have ties with her online life.

If you like titles like And You Thought There is Never a Girl Online or Gamers, then you’re gonna love this Crunchyroll selection. Although it’s only ten episodes long with an OVA, its a nice slice-of-life comedy to check out. We’ve got more filler posts coming your way, as well as new anime conventions for the month of March! Stick around! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Filler Post: D&A’s Top 5 Underrated (Overshadowed) Anime Characters!

You’ve studied for weeks. You trained for months. You’ve be working hard on perfecting your skills in what you can do. Where are we going with this you ask? Well, we’re chipping at the fact that there are some great anime characters out there, who for some reason, get overshadowed or downplayed by their more popular co-stars or counterparts. If you’re an anime fan, then you’ve probably seen or noticed that one character who’s done something awesome, but is either “never heard from” again, or has their screen time cut short. In this filler post that we’ve got for you, we’re highlighting five underrated (or overshadowed) anime characters that we wish got more love.

Rock_Lee

5. Rock Lee (Naruto)

Hey look, it’s Bushy Brow! Yep, this ninja in a green jumpsuit doesn’t use Ninjutsu or Genjutsu, instead he sticks to the old school way; kung-fu fighting Taijutsu! The original martial artist has tussled with villains stronger than him using nothing but Taijutsu, making him one of the original kung-fu bad boys of Naruto – next to the late Bruce Lee.

kamimaxresdefault

4. Kami (Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z)

Now this guy is the reason why the dragon balls even exist! Contrary to popular belief this Namekian is the true reason behind Goku’s adventures. Kami is the overseer of the Earth who once lost his faith in humanity due to their evil deeds and greediness. Then he met and earthling named Goku (back when he was a kid, of course) and his faith in humanity was restored. Let’s remember that without Kami, the dragon balls do NOT exist!

Shizuku_wielding_Yoishigure

3. Shizuku Kurogane (Chivalry of a Failed Knight)

The younger sister of Ikki Kurogane who loved him more than his own father, in fact it was a incest love that most of us would find rather creepy and disturbing. Despite this she is actually quite a skilled knight with the power of water and ice by her side. Her device is called Yoishigure, a short sword that she wields in a reverse grip style during battle. We’re not saying she 100% overshadowed in the series, but should there be a second season, her underrated status may become null and void…hopefully.

Alphonse-Elric

2. Alphonse Elric (FMA, FMA: Brotherhood)

The younger Elric brother who plays ‘sidekick’ to his older sibling. When it comes to alchemy, Alphonse is just as skilled and powerful as his brother Edward Elric. Even though he lost his entire body trying to help Ed bring their mother back to life, Al is able to hold his own in battle against his and his brother’s villains.

Yajirobe11

1. Yajirobe (Dragon Ball Z)

He may not be nowhere near as powerful as the rest of the Z squad, but if it wasn’t for this fluffy ronin, Goku would’ve been dead – again! Yajirobe was the one who cut off Vegeta’s tail during the time he was a Great Ape, which caused him to return back to his normal state. Believe it or not, had Yajirobe not come in when he did during the Saiyan Invasion Arc, the Z warriors wouldn’t have stood a chance against Frieza. There wouldn’t be a Super Saiyan Goku, and the rest of the story arcs afterwards would’ve been completely rearranged, and not in the way we would’ve hoped. So for that, we thank you! ๐Ÿ™‚

That’ll do it for our filler post for today, but stick around for more coming up right here on the blog!

It’s D&A Announcement Time!!

As we close in on the last couple days of February, its about time to issue some new announcements for us on the D&A front! To kick off this announcement filler post we’re proud to announce that we will be attending Anime Festival Orlando in Orlando, Florida this year, located at the Wyndam Resort on International Drive. So to any of our fans who live in or near Orlando, Florida you can see us there on August 3-5th. Next up is the new name for our fan fiction story. The original name for our Sonic/PSG crossover was entitled Sonic Crusaders of Anarchy, has now been changed to Sonic Strikers: Crusaders of Anarchy. The story itself has been divided into three arcs; two of which are originally created for that story.

Sonic Strikers (Crusaders of Anarchy)

Moving on to some anime conventions for the month of March. We’ll be combing the internet for some brand new ones (both big, small, and mid-sized) and in the Summer, we’ll be introducing some new subpages for Cons Near U that highlight anime/video game conventions in other countries like Europe, Brazil, South America, and more! We’re also in the process of creating our very own mascot to represent the blog, so we’ll keep you updated on any new info that comes up. Although we never thought about it we’re thinking about creating a Twitch channel in order to expand our online presence. If you have any suggestions on what content we should have on it, just shoot us your suggestions on our Contact Us page.

That’s all we’ve got as far as announcements are concerned, but don’t worry, cuz’ we’ve got more posts and more excitement coming up right here on D&A Anime Blog! It’s a part of you! ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s Quiet…Too Quiet…

It’s been kinda quiet on the D&A front for a bit and we’ll admit that this is something we’re not usually used to. In spite of that we’re working on some new filler posts to bring to you for the month of March as a part of our own ‘March Madness’. As always we thank our fans for their continued support for our blog as well as the love we’ve been getting from our social media pages. Next Monday we’ll be back with new posts and new updates, all right here on D&A Anime Blog! It’s a part of you! ๐Ÿ™‚

D&A Anime Blog: Miscellany Monday and a Quick Update!

Length-wise this post may be just a bit shorter than our usual ones, but don’t worry, it’s packed with some good stuff! Before we start we’ve just got a quick update to announce; and that is the fact that D&A’s Don’t Lewis will now be changing his DJ/Producer name (once again) to Technocolour. (Maybe because with a moniker like that you can ride that all the way to 60-ish years old, or longer.) As for what we’ve got going on for our Miscellany Monday segment, we’ve got ghosts, detectives, and psychics in this lesser known title known as Ghost Hunt! For the review of the series, click here!

There’s more fun and more action coming your way, next time on D&A Anime Blog! Remember, if you make D&A a part of you, then we’ll make you a part of us! ๐Ÿ™‚
