D&A Anime Blog: Thoughts, Recaps, and April Conventions!

Old Man Winter was pretty stubborn to leave after the first couple of days of Spring, but now that he’s officially gone, it’s time for the warm up to begin! So if you haven’t already heard the news, we’re working on a couple of new videos for our YouTube page that highlight some clips and moments from our 2017 anime conventions, that didn’t make it into the final cut of those videos – kinda like a lost footage reel. We’ll make sure to keep you posted on when the videos go up on our page before April.

Also taking place during that month is D&A Founder, Donte’ Lewis’ one week hiatus from any filler posts or updates from the blog April 9-15, however our social media pages will still be open through the blog’s secondary founder; A. Goldman. Lately we’ve been thinking of some ways that we can expand our current platform for our fans. Some of them have suggested that we start an Instagram page, but not to worry, we’ll have that up in April. Some have suggested that we should start a Twitch channel, now if we did that we would probably put our future podcast series up there. (The N.G.O. Fancast or Nerd-Geek-Otaku Fancast where the fans themselves are the guests, name pending.)

We’re planning on going to Cecil Con as well as Universal FanCon in April. If you’re in the area and wanna see us live and in the flesh, come on out to those cons! ๐Ÿ™‚

As a fan-centered anime blog, we love to hear feedback on how we’re doing and what we can improve on, in order to strive to our goal of being one of the best two-man operated blogs in existence. If you have any tips or suggestions on what type of content (post-wise) you would like to see, send it to us through our Contact Us page! Our ultimate goal for this blog is to one day have our own anime convention entitled Anime Escape; as it will be a 3-day hotel-based, tropical-themed anime convention. It will have Q&A panels, cosplay, anime/manga vendors, video games, late night dance parties, and a whole lot more! One day we’ll make this dream a reality, but we need your help to do it!

That’s all for now! There’s more to come next week! ๐Ÿ™‚

Filler Post: 10 Zones That Gave 90’s Sonic Fans Nostalgic Feels!

Have you ever heard of the old saying, ‘Everything old, becomes new again’? Well that statement depends on a number of things – like TV shows, movies, and video games. Right now we’re in a season where the Hollywood gods want to reboot some cult classics from the 80’s and 90’s. Depending on who is running the operation, a reboot could either bring out the nostalgia that many of us felt back in the day, or it could scar us to the point where we trash the living #@!% out of it on social media.

Reboots must be handled with care, because the movies, games, and shows that we used to watch back in the day, may one day be passed down to future generations, IF we protect their legacy! Sonic Mania is a prime example of a true reboot, and along with this filler post is ten zones that continue to give 90’s fans (like ourselves) utter nostalgia.

Sonic-Mania-Green-Hill-Zone-Underworld

Zone 1: Green Hill Zone

A cult classic to any 90’s gamer who remembers by this game (Sonic 1) for their 16-bit Sega Genesis. From 360 degree loops to dodging spike traps this zone is jam packed with everything you remember from this zone, and a few new things you didn’t. Green Hill Zone is to Sonic, as World 1-1 is to his red-capped rival.

Sonic-Mania-Flying-Battery-Zone

Zone 2: Flying Battery Zone

The second zone on the Sonic & Knuckles Lock-On cartridge! Does anyone remember when Knuckles went through this zone, and at the end of the second act he fought against Dr. Eggman, and not the Egg Robo that threw that bomb at him? Nostalgic!

sonicmaxresdefault

Zone 3: Chemical Plant Zone

A fan-favorite zone from Sonic 2! You can imagine how much trouble some of us may have had going through this zone (for the first time), when Sonic and Tails got stuck in that pink watery stuff called ‘mega mack’, or something like that. Make sure you grab air bubbles if you find yourself in that stuff yet again, otherwise you’ll be doomed to hear the all-too-familiar “Countdown to Death” song.

5afab6b96e7714c58d26b0f725630c9229c5dc0c_hq

Zone 4: Hydrocity Zone

The infamous water zone from Sonic 3 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles! We’re probably guessing that most of you probably lost it when it was confirmed that this zone was going to be in the new Sonic Mania game. Again, we’re just guessing. There’s some new pathways throughout this zone, so think of it as an awesome remixed reboot on a fan-fave classic!

icemaxresdefault

Zone 5: Ice Cap Zone

Even though this zone didn’t make the cut in the final cut of the game, it still holds a special place in our hearts – mainly because of the history of the soundtrack. Although Sonic went through some ‘Hard Times’, it’s nice to know that the blue blur is getting a second chance!

lavamaxresdefault

Zone 6: Lava Reef Zone

Another classic from Sonic & Knuckles that took its players deep into the volcano, where the Death Egg had crashed after the events of Sonic 3. The zone itself will have everything you remember about it from the original, but with a bit of a remixed twist. The nostalgia from this zone will flow quicker that its lava, we guarantee it! ๐Ÿ˜‰

oilmaxresdefault

Zone 7: Oil Ocean Zone

Oh yeah, we all remember this difficult zone from Sonic 2. I wish we could say that this zone is a tad easier now in the Mania remix, but 9 times outta 10, it’s probably not. Do your best to get through this zone without dying, and try not to remember too much how hard it was to get through this zone when you first encountered it.

hillmaxresdefault

Zone 8: Mushroom Hill Zone

Huh, this zone didn’t make it into the final cut either? Well we’re not mad, but many of us remember this classic level from Sonic & Knuckles that (still to this day) has many of us wrapped up in its nostalgic feels. We’re not sure if this zone has been created as a DLC for the upcoming Sonic Mania Plus, but it would make a cool addition along with some other goodies.

ManiaSSZ2clean

Zone 9: Stardust Speedway Zone

The past and the present incarnations of this zone are back with both some old routes, as well as some new gimmicks! They rebooted this zone so good that they even brought back the original soundtrack from the Japanese version of Sonic CD. (Which is a remix of the English version of the past soundtrack of this zone.) Can anyone get through Act 2 in under 90 seconds? You’ll get a cookie if you do! ๐Ÿ˜‰

eggmaxresdefault

Zone 10: Death Egg Zone

The final zone of Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 3 & Knuckles that was only playable as Sonic. Can you imagine this zone coming in right after the Titanic Monarch Zone as a throwback finale to the Sonic Mania game? Honestly, the difficulty level of this zone was not as hazardous as we thought it was going to be when we made it here for the first time. Nevertheless having this as a DLC would be a cool idea…just putting it out there.

That will do it for this filler post as well as our Top 10 Zones that gave us 90’s Sonic kids some serious nostalgic feels when playing Mania. As always we thank you for the 100+ followers for our blog as well as all the love and support from our fans! There’s more to come on the next filler post from D&A Anime Blog! It’s a part of you! ๐Ÿ™‚

D&A’s Crunchyroll Spotlight: How to Keep a Mummy!

Hey guys n’ gals! It’s your two favorite pals running this awesome anime blog we’ve got here, and we’re back with another anime title from the great folks of Crunchyroll! Speaking of which we’ve got a Crunchyroll title right here; How to Keep a Mummy!

mummybanner

Here’s the synopsis:

Sora Kashiwagi is sent a rather large package by his adventuresome father. Upon opening the package it contained a very small, very cute, palm-sized mummy named Mii-kun. Although bad with gifts Sora lightens and warms up to Mii-kun and studies more about him. The series itself highlights the daily life of Mii-kun under the observation of Sora along with his friends/classmates. If you’re a lover of cute things as well as a fan of supernatural slice-of-life comedies, then this title may be just the outlet you’ve been looking for! (We’re pretty sure some of you ladies will like it too!)

You can stream this title subbed (and also dubbed we believe if they’ve already announced it) on Crunchyroll and FunimationNow. See you next post! ๐Ÿ™‚

So without further delay, let’s go over a couple of announcements that we have for you.

YouTube Announcement – It’s been kinda slow on our channel as of late, so we’ve decided that we’ll be posting two new videos highlighting lost convention footage that never made it on the final cut of our highlight videos. Both of them will be posted before the end of the month, so stay tuned for that! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Founder’s One Week Hiatus Announcement – This one we’re not particularly proud of announcing, however it will only effect half of our ‘staff’. (By staff, we mean just D&A’s Donte’ Lewis.) The primary founder, CEO, and Head Writer will be taking an ‘off-the-grid’ hiatus for one week; meaning no social media or blog posts from March 26 – April 1, 2018. A. Goldman will have 100% control over the blog as well as all social media, so if you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask him.

Filler Post: D&A’s Top 5 Most Overpowered Anime Characters!

Whether it’s speed, physical strength, intellect, or supernatural powers, any anime fan knows that when it comes to this awesome medium, there’s bound to be a “Mary Sue” or “Marty Stu” somewhere in the making. We as humans try to perfect ourselves in some aspect of our everyday lives, but unless you’re the man who can walk on water (and no, we’re not talking about Naruto or any ninja from the series), you’re far from perfection. (Apparently Cell didn’t get the memo.)

As for the world of anime, the rules and restrictions behind perfection don’t apply here. And with that we take you on another Top 5 journey with us to discover the five most overpowered anime characters that many of you know, and love.

Orochimaru117

Number 5: Orochimaru (Naruto)

Number five takes us to this slippery snake of the Hidden Sound Village. As one of the legendary Sannin as well as a former Akatsuki member, Orochimaru has a ton of jutsu up his sleeve; even the one that brings people back from the dead. He was defeated in the Shippuden era by Sasuke, only to come back 20+ volumes (or 200+ Shippuden episodes) later in rare form. We’re not saying that he’s a god, we’re just saying that up to everything that’s happened so far (leading up to Boruto), he’s “seemingly” impossible to kill.

-alucard_ova_8

Number 4: Alucard (Hellsing Ultimate)

No one is more overpowered than the king of the vampires himself! Many of us know the story behind Vlad the Impaler, and what happened afterwards that turned him into the most powerful OG vampire to ever walk this earth. His body count is over a million, which backs up the fact that he can’t die by silver bullets, or decapitation, or any human form of torture. This is one hell of a vampire you don’t wanna mess with!

maxresdefaultcode

Number 3: Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass)

As an ace manipulator and tactician, it’s easy for Lelouch to gain the upper hand on his opponents with ease. He’s overpowered on an intellectual level; combine that with his mind-control abilities and he’s pretty much unbeatable…to a certain degree.

7aa6fd539af46597f98644b5036e93b4

Number 2: Goku (Dragon Ball – Dragon Ball Super)

The saiyan from earth is pretty much the most powerful character in the series. Why? Well, he’s the main character! From Vegeta to Beerus Goku has gone toe-to-toe with them all, and no matter how many times he dies he always finds a way to come back. We can see why Vegeta wants to keep up with Kakarot all the time, because every time he thinks he has him, Goku just ascends to a whole new level of power.

aede055c1d4ed362e93e79cb9a434a9f

Number 1: Saitama (One Punch Man)

You can’t get more overpowered than this. Saitama doesn’t look like the kind of hero you’d want saving your town, but he can knock the hell out of a three-story gorilla-ant monster with (you guessed it) one punch. He may be bald and slender, but when it comes to knocking people out, he’s an ace professional!

That’s it on our end of the posting bargain. We’re pretty sure you’ve got some top picks for your most overpowered anime characters list. We’ve got more posts and more fun coming right at cha; as we continue with Part 2 of our March anime convention list and a few other things! As always we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all of your support, and continue to make us a part of you! ๐Ÿ™‚

D&A’s Crunchyroll Spotlight: Darling in the FRANXX!

Hey there guys n’ gals! We’re back with another filler post that highlights new anime title releases from Crunchyroll, and boy do we have a good one. For those of you who are fans of both the Gundam and Evangelion series, this title may be right up your alley. For our Crunchyroll spotlight we’re highlighting the anime title, Darling in the FRANXX

b78ad8031a4b76a04e7762c550ac4140

Here’s the synopsis:

Taking place in a post-apocalyptic future where humanity becomes an endangered species by giant beasts called Klaxosaurs, the remaining members of the human race create a military city named Plantation, where children are partnered up in boy-girl pairs named Parasites and pilot giant mecha called Franxx (hence the name).

One of the boys, Hiro, is viewed as a prodigy, however after failing one of his tests, the emotional stress that befalls him, leaves him unable to pilot a Franxx. That is…until he meets an infamous human Franxx pilot with Klaxosaur blood named Zero Two, who is a member of an infamous race of humans with said blood. (Don’t forget about the red horns on her head.) After her last partner was killed in a Klaxosaur attack, Zero Two convinces Hiro to become her partner (darling).

The series itself (as A. Goldman would put it) kind of has that Evangelion-esque feel to it, mixed with some elements from the Gundam series. However the plot itself is totally different, as Zero Two’s character is a bit mysterious to say the least. If you’re looking for some new sci-fi/mecha anime to check out for 2018, then head on over to Crunchyroll’s streaming website and check out Darling in the FRANXX! ๐Ÿ™‚

5 Signs That Will Let You Know If You’re In a ‘Dying’ Fandom!

Okay, picture yourself having finished watching an anime title, and immediately jumping on the web to chat it up with your online fan buddies afterwards. You then do aย  Google search on the series that you’ve just finished watching, and find tons and tons of fan material on it. (i.e. fan fiction, fan art, cosplay pictures, etc.) Whenever you find out another person likes the series you’ve just watched, you instantly become friends. Everything about the series you’ve watched is awesome; the story, the fandom, the whole nine yards!

Okay, now fast-forward ahead by ten years. Do a Google search of the same series that you’ve watched ten years ago, and see if people are still talking about it online. Head to any fan fiction or fan art site and see if those same stories and artwork from the fans you met back then, are still visible on the site. Notice anything different? The fan fiction stories you’ve once read are not there anymore (or not being posted as often), cosplay pics from the series are scarce, and if you go to an anime convention, only two people out of 40,000+ attendees cosplay as the characters from the series you’ve just watched.

Yep, you’ve realized you’re in a dying fandom.

We’ve all been there, but what do you do about it? Before we answer that question, here’s five ways (or five signs rather) to identify if you’re in a fandom ‘Dead Zone’.

148hfh

5. When its Original Source Material Disappears

The digital age is more powerful today than it was when it first got started. Many ways anime producers got their product out to the masses (and is still relevant today) was through movie advertisements, commercial promos, and now, social media! It’s so easy to promote anime and share it with the fans in this modern day and time, but what happens when fans can no longer find source material on the title(s) that they’re passionate about? Does it mean that the fandom is dead? Not entirely…

4. Rare Cosplay Sightings

Anime conventions are a part of the otaku lifestyle, and with that comes the ‘usual suspects’ of cosplay. (i.e. Naruto, SAO, DBZ to name a few.) A. Goldman an I were big fans of Negima! Magister Negi Magi when it first came out (before Sentai Filmworks bought the rights from FUNimation), but after ten years of going to cons we’ve only found one or two souls cosplaying as Asuna, Ayaka, or Negi Springfield – out of 40,000+ people.

3. When it’s Infected with Trolls (aka Internet Cockroaches)

Or as we like to call them, ‘Internet Cockroaches’. There are many great fandoms out there who have diehard fans in them, but at the same time you also have to worry about the many cockroaches that crawl around on the dark parts of the chat room. This is very troubling for current fans in the fandom, and makes it easy for them to manipulate new fans to turn against the current ones through lies and deceit. If you want to save your fandom from evil, digital heroes (like OWLS) are only a tweet away…

2. When New Fans question the mental state of Old Fans of said Fandom

There are fandom trolls, and there are ‘fandom asylums’. Nothing will drive a new fan away from a fandom better than a ‘toxic environment’ created by existing fans’ digitally ill-willed actions. The My Little Pony fandom is a prime example of this, as many fans of the show are rather hesitant in identifying themselves as ‘bronies’ because of the negative reputation its been getting.

1. When a fandom loses its Core Values

That is the fandom-killing blow of any fandom! If an anime title is promoting peace and fighting against discrimination of any kind, you would expect that the fans of its fandom would follow the same mantra in their groups, or meetups. Once a fandom forgets the core values of the title from which the values are portrayed, then the fandom is nothing more than a ‘hollow shell of a lost cause’. This means that younger generations of the fandom will know the characters of the fandom’s title, but not the real message behind it. And that is a crying shame.

There are many symptoms that can be spotted and identified when it comes to being in a dying fandom. However, it is difficult for a fandom to actually ‘die’. If there are two or more people still talking about a title, movie, or a show years after its ended, then its fandom is not truly dead. Small fandoms are not dying fandoms just because there’s not a lot of activity going on in them, where as if a big fandom falls, it falls hard. Fast!

A Founder’s Thoughts with D.J. Lewis: How I Got into Anime!

Hey there guys! I know that tonight we were supposed to do our bi-weekly D&A Friday’s post, but tonight, I wanna talk about how I first got into anime. For many of us the stories of how we found ourselves trying to get senpai to notice us, can be traced back to the early years of our lives. As for me, that story can be traced back as far as 1995…

hqdefault

1995 – 2000: The Saban Entertainment Era (aka The VHS Era)

Back when I was in the second grade, I watched a lot of cartoons as many of you probably have back in the early/mid 90’s. Back then there was shows like the original X-Men, Spiderman, The Fantastic Four, and so many others. I was also a big Nintendo nerd as well, so when the Super Mario Bros. show would come on every Saturday morning, I was right there with a big bowl of Captain Crunch! (Shout-out to the Captain, and we’re not talkin’ about Ginyu…yet.)

GOT_YOU_1

In fact, back then the first time I watched anime was in 1995. My first ever anime title was Samurai Pizza Cats, and even though the plot is kinda vague to me now as a guy in his late 20’s, I still remember the opening theme like it was yesteryear. Between 1997-1999 I found myself watching the DIC/Saban dub of Sailor Moon, and eventually Dragon Ball Z; the true gritty animation version that 2nd Gen Millennials (or post-Millennials) would call “Caveman Dragon Ball”, causing many 1st Gen Millennials (like myself) to go medieval on their Twitter feed. FYI, 1st Gen Millennials are those born between 1985-2003, and 2nd Gen 2004-Present. We also got cable around this time, so this was also the time period where I started watching the first broadcast of Toonami on Cartoon Network.

2000 – 2005: The FUNimation Entertainment Era (Not for you, but for me)

As I mentioned before I found myself watching more anime when Toonami was broadcasted. During this five year period I was watching a mix of both Eastern and Western animation; such as Tenchi Muyo (Original), Sailor Moon, DBZ, Pokemon, Mon Colle Knights, Digimon, Jackie Chan Adventures, Batman: The Animated Series, Freakizoid, and even Speed Racer (and he came out in the 70’s)! In 2002 a new tread would emerge that would rival the DBZ fandom, and that was Naruto.

Honestly, I hated it when it first came out because it wasn’t, well, Dragon Ball Z. Now before you start slamming those fingers on your keypad and try to digitally reprehend me for saying such a thing, just know that I didn’t start getting into it until the Chunin Exams Arc (two seasons later). I was also in Middle School at this time, and this is right around the time I met my best friend of 15+ years; Aaron M. Goldman, the blog’s secondary founder.

DSCN0004

2005 – Present: College Years, Anime Conventions, and D&A Anime Blog

The FUNimation Channel was the highlight for many of us who were able to afford DISH satellite, as for me I was still kind of limited to just Cartoon Network and Comcast. In 2008 I went to my first ever anime convention in Baltimore, MD known as Otakon. Back then I had no idea there was even such a thing, but when I went, I was exposed to a world that would be the cornerstone of this anime blog. Aaron didn’t start going with me to Otakon until 2010, and for the next eight years that convention was our annual otaku hangout spot!

In the Summer of 2015 we received word that Otakon was going to have is farewell year next Summer at the Baltimore Convention Center. It was also the same year that D&A Anime Blog came into fruition.

The anime titles I watched during this period expanded well from just DBZ. I was watching titles like Negima!, The Sacred Blacksmith, Sekirei, Corpse Princess, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, Danganronpa, and so many more! Since the blog launched back in January of 2016, I now find myself connecting with the voice actors behind hundreds of my favorite anime characters. It’s been a fun 20+ years as an anime fan, as it has gotten me through some tough times while at the same time, helping me make new friends! ๐Ÿ™‚

Filler Post: D&A’s Top 5 Anime Characters with Fire Powers!

If you’ve seen enough anime titles within the last 20 years (depending on what age you are), then you may have noticed that a large fraction of them have special powers. For the Z Fighters of Dragon Ball Z it’s the concept of Ki energy, for Blue Exorcist it may be strong magical powers and abilities. Many of us wish we could have access to those powers in our everyday lives, but with great power comes great responsibility. (And some of us aren’t 100% aware of the kind of responsibility comes with great power.)

Out of all the special abilities we as fans wish we could have or use, Fire seems to be one of the most common of said abilities. There are many characters out there in the anime universe that use fire, but these five in particular are favorites among the anime community (as well as on this post). So here is our Top 5 anime characters who know how to turn up the heat!

Mars-anime

Number 5: Sailor Mars

To celebrate International Women’s Day we kick off this filler post with our fifth pick, Sailor Mars. If you remember watching Sailor Moon back in the 90’s, then you already know that Sailor Mars is one of the original Sailor Scouts. Mars uses talismans that conjure up fire blasts in order to damage her enemies, just as long as her enemy isn’t water-based. Although she has a lot of fire power, we just hope she has a cool temper.

Movie4

Number 4: Shana

A powerful Flame Haze from the Crimson Realm. She carries a katana that allows her to use her fire powers as a Flame Haze. She has the power to wield flames, is an ace swordswoman, and is well known throughout the realm as “The Great One”. She may be cute and moe, but don’t let that fool you. After all she is a Flame Haze.

RoyMustangEp40

Number 3: Roy Mustang

Ah, yes. The legendary flame alchemist of FMA as well as Brotherhood. With just a snap of his finger (like a lighter) he’ll set anything and anyone ablaze that he doesn’t like. This handsome devil does have some charm to him, and by the way ladies, he’s also a dog lover too! ๐Ÿ™‚

HieiOfficial

Number 2: Hiei

Any Yu Yu Hakasho fans in the house? Guess what, your favorite just made it as number two on our Top 5 list! Hiei is one of the four main characters in the series, and is a fire-apparition as well as an S-Class Demon. He has incredible fire and ice resistance thanks to his nature of being a fire demon, which also means that weaker fire-based attacks won’t do any damage to him whatsoever. Aside from his fire abilities Hiei is quite durable in battle, and is also a master swordsman.

Natsu's_image

Number 1: Natsu Dragneel

No one is more on fire than this guy! Natsu Dragneel is a member of the Fairy Tail Guild who possesses Fire Dragon Slayer Magic, and has powerful abilities that allow him to use the full extent of his magic. His signature move Fire Dragon’s Roar is his go to move when it battle, followed by various other fire magic attacks each more powerful than the last. Natsu also has a rather athletic build (much like his VO), which may be the reason why the majority of his fanbase is female. Other then that, Natsu is one hot dude! (No pun intended! XP)

Who’s your favorite flame-throwing anime characters in your Top 5? Feel free to comment in our comment section below, or you can let us know on our Twitter page! Until then, stay golden anime fans! ๐Ÿ™‚
