D&A’s Crunchyroll Spotlight: Magical Girl Ore!

Whew, today’s work day was a killer, but we’re glad to be alive to bring you another installment of our Crunchyroll Spotlight filler posts! If you’re a 90’s kid, then some time in your life you probably met a magical girl by the name of Sailor Moon, right? If the answer’s yes then you might be in for a surprise when it comes to a series like this. Tonight our Crunchyroll title is the magical girl comedy; Magical Girl Ore!

magicalgirlore

So here’s the deal; Saki Uno is an unpopular idol and high school student who discovers that her mother was once a “Magical Girl”, but passed on the tradition due to problems with her back. With some help from a Yazuka-like character named Kokoro, Saki can now transform into “Magical Girl Ore”, however there’s just one small problem; her magical girl form is that of a tall muscular man in a magical girl outfit. As if that wasn’t embarrassing enough; Saki has to fight cute-faced demons who threaten to kidnap her crush, Mohiro, who is now attracted to Saki’s “manly” form. Not only that but her idol partner, Sakuyo, is attracted to her normal female civilian form.

This series takes everything you know about the magical girl genre, and drops that baby on its head. Although being a magical girl is not all fun and games (in fact there’s a dark side to it), they mix in some comedic parts in the story that make it worth while to take a gander at. (Even if you’re not a fan of magical girl anime.) The dub for this series is not out yet, but you can stream the sub on Crunchyroll if you wanna check it out!

That’s it for now, but there’s more filler posts coming up! ๐Ÿ™‚

D&A Anime Blog: It’s Update Time, Again!

Top of the night, fellow otaku and anibloggers! We were going to bring you another filler post about our ‘Top 5 Comedic Anime Characters’, but we’ve decided to push that to next week’s post. A few weeks ago it was brought to our attention if we were going to continue to post any more videos on our YouTube page. The answer to that question is yes; in spite of the fact that getting and recording content has been on the recline. Luckily for us we’ve got two anime conventions that we’re heading to this month, so we’ll be working on getting some convention content as soon as those events arrive.

If you haven’t heard the news, we’ve decided to delete our Patreon page in order to shift our focus on an even bigger long-term goal; having our own anime convention. In one of our previous posts we’ve mentioned what we’ll be doing in order to achieve this goal, and that is broken down into three different phases. The first is to start a Kickstarter for “Project: Paradise” in order to raise funds so that we can establish a budget for the convention; Anime Escape! Phase two is the ‘red tape’ legal matters that have to be crossed. (Gaining and applying Non-profit status, convention location, tax exemptions, looking for con staff, etc.)

Phase three is heavy promotion, contacting booking agencies, creating a website, setting up a payment system for purchasing badges online, the whole nine yards. We’re hoping by our fifth or sixth anniversary, we’ll be able to officially announce our debut year for Anime Escape, on our seventh anniversary (or sooner).

That’s all for announcements! We’ve got more posts coming your way next week! ๐Ÿ™‚

Filler Post: D&A’s Top 5 Most Memorable Lines From Anime!

There comes a time in an anime fan’s life where they look back on the days when they were just starting to get into the medium. For many of us our first title was either Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, or Gundam (plus Yu-Yu Hakasho). Although we’re living in an age of newer, younger anime fans a percentage of us remember some of the most memorable lines in anime – in fact hardcore fans recite those said lines in their sleep. One of the coolest things about being an anime fan today, is the fact that you’ve been blessed with the ability to reminisce one some of your favorite lines from when you were a young lad, or lady. On that note, here are our Top 5 most memorable lines from anime…

Number 5: “It’s Over 9000!!!!!” (Dragon Ball Z)

Now you know we had to pull this one up! One of the most legendary lines in the Dragon Ball Z franchise, was actually a mistake that was made during the dub, that is now on every T-shirt, and said at every convention! In the manga and original sub, Vegeta states to Nappa that Goku’s power level is over 8000. Although we know that now, we can’t help but to reminisce about the mistake that made this show legendary!

Number 4: “Who The Hell Do You Think I Am?!” Gurren Lagann

This line will make any Tengen Toppa fan go nuts! If you saw the series then you already know the man (and the VA) behind this infamous line. You’ll know if your a hardcore fan of the show if you ever said this line right before a fight, before doing a cannonball, or (if your over 18) before making love. (The last part is optional…don’t look at us like that, you know you were thinking about saying it!)

Number 3: “Simply One Hell Of A Butler” (Black Butler)

If you’re a fan of anime and J. Michael Tatum, then we’re pretty sure you’ve heard this line quite a few times in the Black Butler series. Sebastian Michaelis to our recollection, is a fan favorite among a lot of female anime fans. If you don’t believe us ask J. Michael himself! After all, he’s ‘One Hell of an Actor’ to play ‘One Hell of a Butler’! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Number 2: “One Thousand Years of Death!!” (Naruto)

Not only was this a memorable line from part one of the Naruto series, it was also one of the most funniest scenes from the show. The last thing you’d want is to suffer the wrath of the Hidden Leaf’s Secret Finger Jutsu, from everyone’s favorite Team 7 sensei (and Sixth Hokage), Kakashi. (Guess ol’ Naruto had to learn the hard way! XP)

And Number 1: “Team Rocket’s Motto/Intro” (Pokemon)

For the last 20 years this line has gone through many different changes, but the meaning behind it is still the same. Team Rocket’s Jessie, James, and Meowth will always be the original trio behind their blunders in capturing Pikachu, as they have quoted their famous motto in every. Single. Episode! Sure, times may be different now, and their looks may have changed over the last two decades, but one things for sure, old school Pokemon fans remember this motto almost as much as they’ve memorized the entire first opening theme song! (For the love of God don’t make us sing it! Please!)

That will do it on our end. Do you have any memorable moments from way back when you first started watching anime? Don’t be afraid to let us know in the comments below! Until next post, stay golden my friends! ๐Ÿ™‚

A Founder’s Thoughts with D.J. Lewis: Anime Gatekeeping!

Hey there! Hope all is well with you guys n’ gals in this crazy world we call home. Throughout the anime community we as fans experience a lot of things; some good, some not so good, and some just downright ugly. One thing I can say about the anime community as a fan, is the fact that we look out for each other like any other community. Although I don’t really keep up with everything that happens in Hollywood (unless it’s got something to do with an anime convention or Marvel), one of the latest headlines that has been going on for a good week or so, is a social media post from Kim K. about Darling in the FRANXX character; Zero Two, being her ‘inspo’. For those who don’t know what that means, it’s short for inspiration. (Millennial slang.)

I’m not sure what happened after that post was made, but it did open up another hot-button issue plaguing the anime community; anime gatekeeping. As far as I know (and I could be wrong about this) there have been a large handful of famous people from Hollywood, coming out as anime fans (Black Panther’s Michael B. Jordan). So where does the ‘gatekeeping’ come in? Well, anime is one of the most popular mediums in the world. Not only is it popular in North America, but you can also find it in other countries like South America, the Philippines, New Zealand, and a few other places. Back in year’s past anime was a niche medium that only a small handful of us knew about, now in 2018 there are more anime conventions and more ways to watch the anime titles that we love.

Like with any medium or type of the like, when something gets too popular, there’s bound to be issues somewhere along the line. Yes, not everyone will understand nor appreciate anime as the beautiful medium that it is, but the last thing we as fans want to do, is treat it like its a country club. I’ve heard of the term ‘elitist’ come up a lot in life, but we also have to know that each and every one of us who’s an anime fan, come from ALL walks of life. We may not share the same religion, we may not have the same skin color, we may not even have the same body shape, but we all have something in common; we love anime and the people that make it!

I know that we don’t want to lose that one thing that makes being an anime fan so special, but I’m pretty sure most of us know what it was like to be ‘outsider’ of a group of individuals, that knew so much about a topic of interest we knew nothing about. There are some people out in the world who are curious about anime (just like you were), and instead of shutting them out because of the fear of it getting too popular (mostly through memes, AMVs, and abridged series’), we should celebrate and welcome the fact that we’ve got more people becoming anime fans. We veteran fans can teach the newbies a thing or two about anime, and show them different titles of different genres.

I used to be a casual anime fan back when I was in junior high, but then my friend of 15 years; A. Goldman, showed me various titles similar to the genres that I liked. (Romantic-Comedy, Action-Adventure, Slice-of-Life, and some Harem.) I don’t think we have to worry too much about anime, because it lives and dies with us; the fans! (Remember when Toonami went off the air?)

Everyone has their favorite titles and favorite genres, so instead of locking people out who want to learn more about anime, we should welcome them. Take this with a grain of salt though, because not everyone in the fandom is a fan. Stay golden! ๐Ÿ™‚

D&A’s Crunchyroll Spotlight: New Game!

Happy Friday everyone! We’re pretty sure that it’s been a hard week for many of us, but we’re soooo glad that it’s finally Friday! Tonight we’ve got another Crunchyroll anime title for you guys to check out (if you haven’t already done so that is). If you’re a fan of games; PC and video games themselves, then I believe that we just might have an anime title that may suit your needs.

newgamemaxresdefault

If you liked the anime title known as Gamers, then we’ve got another title that’s similar to it! New Game! is an anime series about a high school graduate named Aoda Suzukaze, who has become inspired by the character designs of a certain video game, and begins working as a character designer for the game’s developer; Eagle Jump. While designing characters for the games, Aoda comes to know her colleagues as well as the other staff members of the company. The series pretty much follows Aoda and her colleagues as they develop and work on various characters for various types of games.

You can watch the first and second seasons of New Game! on Crunchyroll and of course FunimationNow! We’ve got more awesome filler posts coming up next week, and also next week, we’re back on the road with a one-day anime convention; CHS Otaku Fest!

Keep making D&A a part of you, and we’ll keep making you a part of us! ๐Ÿ™‚

Filler Post: 7 Things You Didn’t Know About Vegeta!

This character needs no introduction. If you’re a 90’s kid then you’ve already seen his face, heard his voice, and saw his battle with his greatest rival. Wait, you didn’t think we were talking about Goku, did you? Sorry, not this time guys n’ gals. We’re talking about the Saiyan Prince, the undisputed ‘King of all Saiyans’, the one and only…Prince Vegeta!

Vegeta-1

From the manga to the anime, Dragon Ball Z is a historic part of anime history, as being one of the best pioneering action-packed titles straight outta Japan. From King Piccolo to Beerus the Destroyer fans both old and new have watched Goku and Co. battle powerful villains in order to keep the earth safe. There are a lot of memorable fighters among the Z-ranks, but one of the most iconic has to be Bulma’s heel-turned-hero husband. Although he’s a favorite among the fanbase, there are a few things about him that some fans don’t know about. Some.

Not to worry though, because we’ve been combing through the web and found some interesting things about our favorite ruthless saiyan prince. So from us to you here are seven things you didn’t know about Vegeta, the Prince of all Saiyans!

7. He Was Supposed to be “Killed” in the First Arc!

Yeah, even we didn’t believe it, but it’s true! According to Toriyama, Vegeta was deemed one of his least favorite characters at the time he was working on the Saiyan Invasion Arc. At first he was supposed to be a one-and-done villain for the first arc, but then a couple “things” happened that involved fan letters and story development, and here we are in 2018 with Vegeta a part of the Z-Fighter’s Crew! (He was killed by Frieza though, but was brought back by the Namekian dragon balls.)

6. He “Had” a Brother!

Yes Trunks, you “had” an uncle. In fact Vegeta’s brother is a part of the DBZ canon, but never in the entire series is he seen. Although he’s completely unlike his older sibling (in terms of being a warrior or even sharing his aggression), Tarble is in fact Trunks’ uncle, even though he’s never seen him nor even knows where he currently is; only because Vegeta himself doesn’t know.

5. He Has a Super Saiyan 3 Transformation!

Okay, we all know how bad he wants to surpass Goku in terms of power (and he’s done so on a few occasions in his own way), but what many of us may not know, is the fact that he has a SSJ3 transformation. Although it would have been appropriate to have used it during the Majin Buu Saga, Vegeta knew how much power it would drain from user’s body, plus it would be rendered useless after SSJ3 Gotenks was defeated by Copy Vegeta in Dragon Ball Super.

4. He Can Survive in Space!

Long enough to blow up a planet, yes. It was made clear to us that during the Frieza Saga as well as the rest of the series, saiyans really can’t breathe in space the same way we can’t. However thanks to Vegeta disproving this theory, saiyans can ‘survive’ in space for a while thanks to their strong lung capacity.

maxresdefaultgvb

3. He Retains his Majin Power!

While Babidi’s spell unleashes the evil in a person’s heart, it also unlocks their hidden potential (much like Gohan and Krillin did when they paid a visit to the Namekian elder). As Majin Vegeta, the ‘Demon Prince’ was powerful enough to go toe-to-toe with SSJ2 Goku, and proved to be more than a match. Even after blowing himself up Vegeta retained the power from his Majin state through training, much like Goku did with his Godly power during his battle with Beerus.

2. He Defeats/Kills the Ginyu Force!

Sometimes being a saiyan really does pay off. In Vegeta’s case he actually kills the entire Ginyu Force because of sneak attacks and power level (Zenkai) boost while on Namek. Ginyu himself wasn’t killed until Resurrection ‘F’ when Ginyu changed from being a frog to one of Frieza’s soldier’s Tagoma. Gohan defeated him, but the Saiyan Prince kills him.

1. He’s The Oldest Z-Fighter!

At this point in the franchise Vegeta is older than the recurring main cast (with a few exceptions). He was five when Goku was born, so that makes him four years older than Krillin. (With Yamcha, Tien, and Bulma coming just a year younger than the Saiyan Prince.) By the time the Buu Sage swung around, it was confirmed that Vegeta is indeed older than the rest of the main cast; physically and mentally.

So there you have it! The seven things about everyone’s favorite saiyan prince you never knew. Although his heart has mellowed out, one thing that will never change about Vegeta, is his pride. And that’s a fact!

D&A Crunchyroll Spotlight: Overlord!!

Happy post-Easter to all of you guys and gals who avoided getting pranked on April Fools Day; commonly known as ‘dipping-my-kid-sister’s-hand-into-a-bucket-of-spiders’ day! This filler post got a little delayed today, but don’t worry cuz’ we’ve got another anime title from the great guys and staff from Crunchyroll, to share with you. For all of you MMORPG players out there who happen to like anime, we’ve got just the title for you! ๐Ÿ™‚

Overlord-Season-2-English-Dub-Announced-For-Anime-By-Funimation-Number-Of-Episodes-Confirmed-In-2018

Our Crunchyroll Spotlight title we’ve got for you is none other than a fantasy anime called Overlord! Basically the plot goes like this; a DMMORPG (Dive Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) called Yggdrasil was released in the year 2126. It is the most advanced DMMORPG of its kind due to the fact that it has heightened the interactive factor between the player, and the game. After a 12-year run the game servers are about to be shut down, as one of the members of the game’s strongest guilds; Ainz Ooal Gown, known by the character Momonga, continues to stay logged in until the day the game servers shut down for good. (Sadden by the fact that all of his friends have real lives and decided to quit the game.)

Upon the day of the shut-down Momonga discovers that the world of Yggdrasil, has been recreated as a reality of its own. All of its NPC’s have been brought to life as Momonga finds himself trapped in his character avatar. Since he can’t log out or do any other functions as a human being, Momonga sets off to find out if other players are trapped in this world along with him; taking on his former guild name.

So far there are currently two seasons of this anime title on Crunchyroll as well as FunimationNow. Although its under the fantasy genre, there’s a little bit of everything; except the ‘child-safety switch’. Should you get the chance you should check this anime title out if you’re a fan of MMORPG’s and fantasy. That’s all we’ve got for now but stick around, cuz’ there’s more posts coming up! ๐Ÿ˜‰

There are four different categories for our special upcoming awards:
